About the Community

Located at the base of the beautiful Blue Mountains in Eastern Oregon, this agriculturally-based rural community is an outdoor enthusiast and sportsman’s paradise.  Well known for its world-class Pendleton Round-Up rodeo, the area also boasts hunting, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, cycling, hiking, and many other recreational activities.  The City of Pendleton also enjoys a thriving arts culture with a wonderful art center, community theater, and many historic attractions.  Combined with clean air, good schools, and an active community college, Pendleton is a vibrant and family-friendly community. The City serves a population base of about 16,800.

About the Department

The Planning Department is a division of the Community Development Department, which also includes Engineering and Building divisions.  The City Planner is responsible for administering the City’s Unified Development Code, including ensuring compliance with related City or State laws and codes. Professional planning and land use advice is provided to the public, staff, the Planning Commission, City Council and other officials.  To help citizens navigate a complex system of laws and rules, Planning staff must have a thorough knowledge of zoning laws and comprehensive plans including their formation, process of adoption, and enforcement, as well as a passion for customer service. 

About the Position

The City is looking for someone with experience and the ability to develop, communicate, and implement a vision for the future. Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in land use planning, urban planning, landscape architecture or a closely related field; and five years progressively responsible experience in municipal planning; or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.  Requires skill in use of personal computers and working knowledge of GIS applications, skill in conducting research, writing technical reports, grant applications and developing plans and procedures, and the ability to communicate effectively.

Salary range: $5,016-$6,700/month DOE. Excellent benefits package includes: medical; dental; vision; retirement; life insurance, and more.
